Cross-Platform App Development with Kotlin Multiplatform
Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) lets us write shared business logic once and compile it to fully native outputs: an Android project for Android Studio and an iOS project for Xcode. No compromises on performance, no WebViews, no JavaScript bridge — just genuine native apps.
How Kotlin Multiplatform Works
KMP compiles to native binaries on each platform. The shared module — which contains networking, data persistence, business rules and domain models — is written in Kotlin. The UI layer remains 100% platform-native: Jetpack Compose on Android (Android Studio) and SwiftUI on iOS (Xcode). The result is two apps that look, feel and perform exactly as users expect on each platform.
What We Share Across Platforms
- Networking layer (Ktor)
- Data persistence (SQLDelight, Room)
- Business logic and domain models
- State management and use cases
- API clients and serialization (kotlinx.serialization)
- Analytics and error tracking integrations
What Stays Native
- iOS UI: SwiftUI / UIKit — built in Xcode, submitted to the App Store
- Android UI: Jetpack Compose / Views — built in Android Studio, submitted to Google Play
- Platform-specific APIs: camera, notifications, biometrics, NFC, BLE
KMP vs Flutter vs React Native
Unlike Flutter (which renders its own UI) or React Native (which uses a JavaScript bridge), Kotlin Multiplatform does not touch the UI layer. It compiles shared logic to native ARM binaries. This means zero performance overhead, full access to platform APIs, and apps that pass Apple’s and Google’s most stringent review guidelines without workarounds.
When to Choose Kotlin Multiplatform
- You need both iOS and Android but want genuinely native quality
- Your app has complex business logic that would otherwise need to be duplicated
- You have an existing Android Kotlin codebase and want to expand to iOS
- Performance, offline capability or hardware access are critical requirements
Why Mokapp
We have deep expertise in both the Android (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose) and iOS (Swift, SwiftUI) ecosystems. We know where KMP fits perfectly and where it is better to build separate native apps. We help you make the right architectural decision from day one.
